Jim Westphalen New Works of Land, Sea and Sky
"In this great land that we call America, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the gift of nature’s beauty. As we stand on the shore, the sea tugs at our soul, creating in us an innate sense of longing and wonder. The vastness of the ever-changing sky stirs in us a vulnerability, yet inspires us to live a life without limits. The touch of man’s hand upon our diverse landscape urges us forward, while reminding us of just how very fragile the land is and we are.
Growing up near the water on the Long Island coast, I have always been drawn to the sea. I spent most of my childhood summer days either swimming or fishing or playing on the water. Now as an adult, I have a renewed sense of wonder and it has become my muse.
As an east-coaster, the “Big Sky” of the Great Plains has long held a mysterious fascination for me. My first trip out to the western prairie left me at a complete loss for words. How do you wrap your head around, let alone create a work that captures the feeling of that vastness, that seemingly endless landscape? We are very small.
In all the diversity that our county’s terrain has to offer, I continue to be pulled to the built rural landscape, with it’s aging structures that tell the story of us. We are fragile and transient and these vanishing buildings serve as a reminder that we must appreciate all that we fleetingly hold and all that we get to experience, by grace, for this brief moment in time.
Yes, there is beauty in each element on its own, but it is their inseparable bond, one touching the next in endless rhythm, that makes the remarkable whole. Making us whole. And as I process this extraordinary connection, one that is so easily taken for granted, it is impossible for me to separate the hand of the creator from this gift. We are indeed blessed."

Man-Made Mother Earth
Stefania Urist
Solo Exhibition
Man-Made Mother Earth, Stefania Urist’s solo exhibition at Helmholz Fine Art, addresses the relationships between humans, nature, and architecture.
The categories of humanity, nature, and architecture are more intertwined and complex than the discrete concepts suggest. For this reason, Urist’s sculptures connect man-made materials with natural forms in order to complicate and question these divisions that humans have created. The artwork explores these interconnected concepts to bring attention to human involvement in the constant alteration of natural habitats and the Anthropocene.
Urist’s newest series of leaded glass tree parts, entitled Make Your Mark, is a critique on the way humans see nature as a resource to use at their disposal. The human fingerprints replace the rings of the tree where the stump, log, or tree cookie have been cut. The only way to see this view of the tree rings, in order to determine its age, is by cutting the tree to see the slice. The human hand is evident in this process. If the tree were to fall or break naturally, it would splinter, not allowing for the view of the rings, thus, the human fingerprint. The echoing pattern of the tree rings in the finger print then reminds the viewer that humans are part of nature, but the tree has been affected by humans.
Urist’s work includes found, used, and repurposed construction materials like glass, metal, and wood as a conceptual reference point to draw connections and explore differences between city and nature, architecture and organic matter, and geometric structures and human bodies.
We’re excited to bring this important solo exhibition to our community. For your health and safety, we will be limiting the gallery to 25 people at a time, and you will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
VANISH
Jim Westphalen Solo Exhibition
4-6pm Artist Reception
These built icons of our country’s rural heritage are disappearing at an alarming rate. I sense an urgency to capture their beauty in a way that celebrates not only what they once were, but what they have now become. May these images be an encouragement to open our eyes and appreciate what we have for this brief moment in time, for sadly, most will eventually succumb and fold into the soil on which they were built upon, taking their stories with them.
Titans of the Sea
New Body of Work from Lisa Cueman
Lisa Cueman will give a talk at 6pm
The Camargue horse is an ancient breed of horse indigenous to the Camargue area in southern France. Its origins remain relatively unknown, although it is generally considered one of the oldest breeds of horses in the world.
“I am very excited to be releasing a few images from my new body of work called “Titans of the Sea”from the Camargue region in the south of France. Two years in the making, I have been contemplating and experimenting with the right esthetic that captures and conveys all that photographing these durable horses means to me. Like so much in Europe, these horses are steeped in centuries of tradition beginning with the breeding bloodlines, to the early years being wild in the salt marshes, to the final transformation into dependable and sweet dispositioned work horses. It has truly been an amazing discovery and I am thrilled to present the beginnings of my new work showcasing a look and feel that I feel conveys the beauty of these unique horses and the celebrated region.”
Visual Poetry
Thomas Torak Solo Exhibition
Thomas Torak is a modern master painter working in the classical tradition. His paintings are known for their breadth and luminosity, rich color and lively brushwork. An expert still life, figure, and landscape painter, Thomas refers to his paintings as visual poetry. His love of classical music is evident in his work. He likes to say he listens to what he is painting. You can often see this in the titles of his work such as Adagio for Peonies or Variations on a Theme by Cezanne. He once had an entire exhibition of Nocturnes inspired by, and dedicated to, Chopin.

Pat Musick: Sculptures and Collages
Grand Opening Exhibition
Pat Musick: Sculptures and Collages is a series of large scale works on paper and sculpture. The theme addresses life processes… this time that of aging. As an environmental artist, Musick uses fall Vermont trees as a metaphor for this life passage. Although the trees are dropping their garment, the heart and soul (trunk and branches) remain strong and alive. There are no roots, however, as the trees levitate delicately between earth and the heavens.
